I’m happy to be able to share a new essay I have had published as part of the first Metode volume on ‘Deep Surface’, titled “The Matter of Illusion: Seeing the Surface of Facsimiles.

It is written from an auto-ethnographical perspective detailing my journey of understanding through a research residency at Factum Foundation last summer. At their workshop in Madrid, I documented the production of facsimiles of cultural heritage objects and works of art, experienced in the making. Whilst Factum employ pioneering techniques in digital documentation and rematerialisation, I was fascinated by the synergy between craftperson and technology, and that the final touches to these objects were often made by the hands of a skilled conservator.

The essay contributed to an interesting collective discussion developed over several workshops held in Oslo during the autumn at ‘ROM for kunst og arkitektur’, which have led to this first collection of writings by an exciting group of authors:
